Overview

The School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of Guangdong University of Technology originated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Guangzhou Institute of Technology, which was founded in 1958 and has a history of more than 60 years. The college has successively won the honorary titles of "National Civilized Unit", "National Advanced Collective of the Education System", and "Guangdong Civilized Unit". In 2022, the Party Committee of the College approved the project "National Model College for Party Building Work", and in 2018, it was approved for the project "Double Creation" work benchmark college for party building in Guangdong Province in the new era of colleges and universities. It has been awarded the honorary titles of "Guangdong Advanced Grassroots Party Organization", "Guangdong Civilized Unit", and "Guangdong Advanced Grassroots Party Organization for Strengthening the Foundation". The college has trained more than 50,000 graduates and currently has 4,965 students, including 192 doctoral students, 1,755 master's students, and 3,081 undergraduates.

At present, the college has departments of mechanical and electronic engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical design and packaging engineering, automotive engineering, industrial engineering, measurement and control technology, intelligent manufacturing and robotics research institute, extents and innovation methods research institute, experimental centre and party and government office. It has a first-level doctoral program in mechanical engineering, a doctoral program in mechanical professional degree, a postdoctoral research station in mechanical engineering, and a first-level master's program in instrument science and technology. Among them, the discipline of mechanical engineering is a key construction discipline of Guangdong Province's "211 Project", a key discipline of Guangdong Province's peak climbing, and a key construction discipline of Guangdong Province's "high-level university"; it received B+ in the fourth/fifth round of national discipline evaluation; in the 2024 Soft Science "China's Best Discipline Ranking", the discipline of mechanical engineering ranked 18th, entering the top 8% in the country; it has made important contributions to the school's engineering discipline entering the top 0.3% of the global ESI ranking.

The college adheres to the university's development philosophy, upholds the fundamental mission of "fostering virtue and nurturing talent," and follows the motto of "Seeking Truth, Pursuing Reality, Embracing Innovation, and Striving for Progress." It promotes the college spirit of "Cultivating Virtue and Embracing Knowledge, Pursuing Truth and Innovation, Advancing with Practical Efforts, and Striving for Excellence." With the development goals of "aiming at the forefront of international academia, building world-class disciplines, and cultivating innovative talents," the college highlights the characteristic of "strengthening deep integration with industries and optimizing industry-university-research cooperation and collaborative innovation." Seizing new opportunities brought by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development plan, the college is committed to establishing high grounds in party building, disciplines, education, talent cultivation, and scientific and technological innovation.

The college currently has 172 full-time teachers, including 65 professors and 63 associate professors. 91.2% of the teachers have doctoral degrees, and 60.6% have overseas experience. There are 3 dual-appointed academicians, 2 valid academician candidates, 1 academician of the World Academy of Ceramics and the Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials Science, and 1 foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering; there are 19 national high-level talents such as overseas high-level talents, high-level talents of the Ministry of Education, leading talents of the National Special Support Program, outstanding young talents, and excellent young talents; there are 21 provincial high-level talents such as leading talents introduced by Guangdong Province, Pearl River Scholars, Guangdong Outstanding Young Talents, Guangdong Province Special Support Program Science and Technology Innovation Young Top Talents, Guangdong Province Pearl River Talent Program Young Top Talents; there are 4 Guangdong Province Innovative Research Teams, ranking first among colleges and departments in the province.

The college has significant advantages in scientific research platforms and outstanding scientific research strength. There are currently a number of national, provincial and municipal key scientific research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Precision Electronic Manufacturing Technology and Equipment, the National Key Laboratory of High-Performance Tools (Guangdong University of Technology), the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Internet of Things Technology for Manufacturing, the Guangdong 3C Electronic Product Manufacturing Equipment Provincial and Ministry Co-construction Collaborative Innovation Center, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Intelligent Detection and Manufacturing Internet of Things, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Computer Integrated Manufacturing, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Minimally Invasive Surgical Instrument Design and Precision Manufacturing, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Manufacturing Technology for Marine Energy Equipment, and 6 Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Centers. In recent years, the college has won 1 second prize in the National Technological Invention Award and 3 second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award as the first completed unit. In the past five years, the college has undertaken more than 1,000 scientific research projects, with a total research funding of 400 million yuan; it has won 1 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award, 1 first prize in the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements Award for Higher Education Institutions (Science and Technology); it has won 5 first prizes and 6 second prizes in Guangdong Province's Technological Invention Award and Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 first prizes and 3 second prizes in China's Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award; it has won 2 Chinese Patent Silver Awards and 4 Excellence Awards, 4 Guangdong Patent Gold Awards, 2 Silver Awards and 1 Excellence Award, and 4 gold awards at the London and Geneva International Invention Exhibitions in the UK.

The college attaches great importance to professional construction, curriculum construction and teaching reform. There are currently 7 undergraduate majors. In the 2024 Soft Science "China University Major Ranking", the major of mechanical and electronic engineering received an A+, the major of mechanical design and manufacturing and its automation and intelligent manufacturing engineering received an A, and the majors of industrial engineering, new energy vehicle engineering and measurement and control technology and instrumentation received a B+. The college currently has 2 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 national higher education speciality construction site, 1 national professional comprehensive reform pilot major, 1 pilot major of the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, and 2 majors that have passed the Ministry of Education's engineering education professional certification; it has 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national teaching team, 4 national first-class courses, 1 national course ideological and political demonstration course, 4 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 1 Guangdong Provincial Collaborative Education Center. It undertakes 1 of the first batch of "new engineering" research and practice projects of the Ministry of Education. In the past five years, it has won 1 second prize in the National Teaching Achievement Award, 1 first prize and 2 second prizes in the Provincial Teaching Achievement Award, and 1 provincial teaching teacher award.

The college has established an innovative and entrepreneurial talent training system led by subject competitions, forming a "one major, one competition" brand, with fruitful results in dual innovation, outstanding student innovation ability, and full entrepreneurial vitality. In the past five years, more than 1,000 students from the college have won awards in provincial and ministerial competitions and more than 300 awards at the national level. The three special competitions have achieved remarkable results: 1 first prize and 5 second prizes in the National College Students' "Challenge Cup" Science and Technology Competition; 3 gold medals in the "Chuang Qingchun" National College Students Entrepreneurship Competition; and entered the national finals of the "Internet +" National College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for five consecutive sessions, and won 5 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. Doctoral students won 1 Outstanding Work Award and 3 Special Awards for the Excellent Mechanical Doctoral Dissertation Award of Shanghai Yin, 1 student won the National Outstanding Communist Youth League Member, 1 student won the China College Students of the Year Finalist Award, and 4 students won the Guangdong Province Outstanding Student, Guangdong Province Outstanding Communist Youth League Member and Guangdong College Students of the Year.
